VISIT FROME DURING YOUR STAY AT LONG HAZEL PARK, CARAVAN PARK & CAMPSITE

One of Somerset's coolest towns, Frome, makes a great day trip from our caravan park and campsite in Sparkford, Somerset. You may well have seen Frome feature on many TV shows of late, particularly focusing on the independent market held monthly.

During the industrial revolution, Frome was one of Somerset's largest towns, even larger than the city of Bath! Named by The Times as the "sixth coolest town in Britain", Frome has also been named one of Time Out Magazine's best places to visit outside of London for a weekend break.

Wells came top of the UK's tourist destinations for 2024 in a Which? survey and second in The Telegraph's scientific study of the UK's Top Cities, placing it just behind Bath.

In recent years, the town of Frome has become known for the monthly markets. The Frome Independent is held on the first Sunday of each month featuring independent craftspeople, designers, makers, food producers and vintage traders.

Frome has been a market town since before the Norman Conquest and is a big part of the area's history.  The market hosts live music and street performance, as well as activities to join in with. It is free to visit and dog friendly.

The market recently featured on Somerset: Wonder of the West Country with Alan Titchmarsh on Channel 5.

Frome Festival is held annually in July and spans ten days of the summer. The festival showcases the vibrant cultural scene in Frome and, recently, has featured 160 venues across the town.

The festival enjoys a wide range of events, including live music, comedy, theatre, exhibitions, food and drink and wellness events. Many of the events are also free to visit.

Local garden owners also host open gardens for the festival, as well as open art studios held at their homes on the art trail. A treasure hunt is also held across the town to enjoy with some "mildly devious clues".

Frome holds a good number of markets dotted around the town centre, as well as the Frome Independent Market:

General markets - Wednesday and Saturday

Frome Flea and Antique Market - every Wednesday

Magpie Market - first Sunday of the month March to December

Car boot sale - last Sunday of the month

Flea Market Pottery
Chocolate Bites

Frome hosts many special events throughout the year, with some diverse independent markets held by specialist sellers. Make sure to look out for the following:

Frome Chocolate Festival

Frome Vegan Fair

Frome Vintage Bazaar

Frome Christmas Extravaganza

Frome has a number of venues committed to the arts dotted around the town. The two theatres, Memorial and Merlin, are also joined by a small cinema, Westway Cinema.

Frome is also home to The Black Swan, Rook Lane Arts and the Silk Mill galleries, all housed in historic local buildings. Exhibitions are usually featuring local artists and up and coming creatives.

Frome's venue, The Cheese and Grain, hosts many musical and comedy events and has been known to hold secret shows for Glastonbury headliners.

Frome is a great place to visit for small, independent shops. The three main shopping streets are Cheap Street, Palmer Street and St Catherine's, where you will find antique shops, record stores, craft shops, jewllers and stationers.

The majority of shops in Frome are traditional and independent stores, where you'll also find a butcher, wholefood stores, greengrocers and a shop specifically stocking specialist gifts for your dog.

One of Frome's popular annual events is the Agricultural and Cheese Show. Held in September, the show has over 350 stands with local fine food, cheese, crafts and other British produce for purchase.

The show hosts village green entertainment, as well as a countryside pursuits area and a livestock village to enjoy. The Global Cheese Awards are also held here during the show.

The show has been held for over 150 years, with small and large cheesemakers.
